Burial

When I buy graves, do I own the land?

When you purchase a cemetery lot or niche, you are not purchasing the space itself. You are purchasing the right to be buried or to have your cremains placed in that space. This is called an “interment right”. Erie Cemetery Association retains the ownership of the land, and the responsibility to care for it.

How long do my interment rights last?

At this time, we sell only PERPETUAL interment rights. You and your heirs will own the rights forever.

Is there still burial space in Erie Cemetery?

Yes. We offer primarily raised marker graves, as well as some flush marker spaces reserved strictly for at-need use. We have several very attractive monument lots for sale. For cremations, there is space available for both in-ground interment and in columbarium niches.
